Subtitling blethers at Bar-L

Every so often working class or rural Scots-based Scottish speech appears on the TV. If Scots is a ‘dialect of English’, it should be readily comprehensible to non-Scottish English speakers. But it often isn’t so it is subtitled. then Scots get offended because (a) they can undertand it themselves and (b) they think they speak English. Much hilarity ensues.

SCOTS have been left in stitches after Ross Kemp’s latest documentary on the notorious Barlinnie prison used subtitles. STV helpfully translated the Glasgow accent for viewers across the country tonight for Ross Kemp: Behind Bars.
