A weel thocht oot response to the “Scots is just slang” haivers.
Because every time a Twitter account with wee Union Jack emojis in the username implies that Scots is just lazy or unintelligent use of English and someone else believes it, they are believing that the whole communities of people across Scotland who use Scots in differing contexts and at differing levels, including themselves if they too are Scottish, are also lazy and unintelligent – unable to properly grasp the language of their superiors. Promoting the credibility of Scots does not need to automatically be some sort of nationalist agenda. It’s about promoting the idea that the language you use to express yourself should not continue to define your character, your value as a person, and the barriers you might face and opportunities you might obtain throughout your life.
