According to the Northern Ireland Life and Times survey 224,520 people in Northern Ireland can speak Irish (Gaeilge), this includes 8980 who use Irish as their primary language.

The discourse around language in Northern Ireland may be fraught, but at least Irish and Ulster-Scots are talked about together. In Scotland, Gaelic and Scots discussions remain separate.
