Scots not normalised “until after independence”?

Independence is not going to ‘save’ Scots, folks. Since devolution in 1999 there have been two language acts. The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 was passed by the Scottish Parliament to secure the status of the Gaelic language. The British Sign Language (Scotland) Act was passed in 2015 to raise awareness of BSL and improve access to services for those using that language. Among other things, both Acts require the Scottish Government and other public bodies to create their own plans on how they will promote the use of the two languages. Both valuable initiatives, but show it is already within the remit of Scottish Parliament to campaign for, develop and pass an equivalent Act for the Scots language. This is not about a lack of political power but a lack of political will.
